Introduction
The second Cornwall Workshop was held at Kestle Barton from 18 to 25 October 2013 and organised by CAST. It was led by artists Simon Starling and Hamish Fulton. A full account of the workshop is archived here.
The Workshop opened with communal walks led by Hamish Fulton on the weekend of 19 and 20 October to mark the 40th anniversary of his commitment to ‘only make art resulting from the experience of individual walks’. The walks were organised in partnership with Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange and took place in the Penzance area. Simon Starling took the Fulton walks as a starting point for an exploration of relationships between action, experience and documentation. The Workshop also included a field trip in Clay Country (the clay mining area near St Austell) led by artist Billy Wynter with Hadrian Pigott.
Eleven participants were selected from an open submission of fifty-five applicants. Alistair Hudson, Deputy Director of Grizedale, served on the selection panel as external selector. In addition, and in recognition of the value of international exchange and networking, four international participants were invited to be workshop participants, with the support of overseas cultural agencies.
In addition to Simon Starling, workshop leaders included Martin Clark, Artistic Director of Tate St Ives, recently appointed Director of the Bergen Kunsthall in Norway, and writer and curator Ellen Mara De Wachter, Curator of Public Collection Development at the Contemporary Art Society.
